Metamizole helps relieve moderate or severe pain as in headache, migraine, toothache, pain after surgery, pain caused by cancer, and muscle and joint pain.
This medicine may also be used to treat fever when other measures are not advisable and effective.
Take Metamizole exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than directed by your doctor.
Take this medicine together with food or immediately after a meal.
Metamizole is available as a tablet, capsule, solution, powder or granules for solution. Take it with a glass of water.
Do not take Metamizole if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to similar medicines such as phenazone, phenylbutazone, diclofenac, ibuprofen, paracetamol.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- blood disorders e.g. decrease in red or white blood cells of the body
- bone marrow disorder
- G6PD deficiency (an inherited blood disorder that affects the red blood cell)
- porphyria (an inherited disorder that may cause skin or nerve problems)
as Metamizole may not be suitable for you.
Do not give Metamizole to children who are younger than 3 months old or who weighs lower than 5 kg unless instructed to do so by the doctor.
Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with Metamizole, alert your doctor immediately. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child. You must use proven birth control methods while taking Metamizole.
Do not take this medicine if you are breastfeeding.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- low blood pressure and other blood vessel diseases
- dehydration
- asthma, hives that appear more than 6 weeks and recur frequently
- stomach ulcer
- liver disease
- kidney disease
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Metamizole to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and your response to this medicine regularly. You may need to undergo routine blood tests while you are being treated with Metamizole.
Metamizole may impair your ability to concentrate. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects may include any of the following: nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort or pain, chest pain, palpitations, red-colored urine, rashes, fever, chills.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- signs and symptoms of severe allergic reactions e.g. cold sweat, severe rashes, swollen face, eyes, lips, tongue or throat, breathlessness
- rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth or eyes accompanied by fever
- sudden fever, chills, sore throat, mouth ulcers, tiredness, and weakness
- unusual bleeding or bruising
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- other NSAIDs (medicines for pain and inflammation) e.g. aspirin, phenylbutazone
- blood-thinning medicines e.g. warfarin
- medicines for mood disorders e.g. chlorpromazine, moclobemide, selegiline
- birth control pills
- medicines for certain immune disorders e.g. ciclosporin, methotrexate
- allopurinol (medicine for gout)
- glutethimide (medicine for sleep disorder)
- phenytoin (medicine for fits or seizures)
- bupropion (medicine to treat depression)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Metamizole.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light. Light may cause the medication to lose some of its effectiveness.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
