Menthol is used on its own or together with other medicines for temporary relief of minor pain in the muscles and joints (such as sprains, strains, cramps).
Use Menthol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Menthol is available on its own or together with other medicines as a cream, gel, ointment, stick, spray or patch.
If you are using the cream, ointment, gel, or stick follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry affected area before application.
- Apply and massage gently on the skin. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube.
If you are using the spray, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Spray it directly onto the affected area.
- Massage gently on the skin if preferred. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
If you are using the patch, follow these steps:
- Remove the patch from the protective foil pouch and peel away half of the liner. Do not touch the sticky side with your fingers.
- Apply the patch to a clean, dry, and hairless area on the part of your body where the pain is. Make sure that the area of skin is not oily, cut, blistered or irritated. The skin should be free of any powder, creams or lotions. If the area of skin is hairy, you should shave the area at least 3 days before you apply the patch. Do not put the patch near the waistline or where your belt or clothes may rub against it.
- Peel away the other half of the liner. Press firmly on the skin for a few seconds to ensure that the patch stays on the skin.
- If this patch falls off, apply a new patch and change the patch at the usual scheduled time. If the sides of the patch lift, use a plaster or bandage to secure it to your skin.
- Throw away the used patch by folding the sticky sides together, put back in empty pouch, and place it in a rubbish bin. Do not throw it into the toilet bowl. Wash your hands after throwing the used patch.
Menthol may also be available in other drug formulations in some countries, it is best to discuss with your doctor or pharmacist on how you should use your medicine.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical advice.
You may stop using Menthol when you have no more muscle or joint pain.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Do not use Menthol if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any other painkillers combined with Menthol, such as aspirin.
Do not apply Menthol to wounds, serious burns, sensitive, damaged or irritated skin.
Avoid contact with your eyes and mucous membranes.
Menthol may be used in combination with medicines not suitable for children below 12 years old. Please read the information included with the product before use.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Menthol to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Do not cover the area which the medicine is applied to with tight fitting bandages or heat the area with a heating pad.
This medicine in its various forms can be flammable. Avoid exposure of the medicine to fire and flames or smoking during and immediately after applying Menthol on your skin.
Menthol may cause any of the following side effect: skin irritation, itching, burning and stinging sensation at the application site.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are using other creams, ointments or gels on the affected area.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Available products containing Menthol may vary with its storage requirements. Ask your doctor or pharmacist on how to properly store this medicine.
Keep away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
