Lemborexant is used to help manage sleep in individuals who have difficulty falling or staying asleep (also known as insomnia).
Take Lemborexant exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take it on an empty stomach, at the same time each day right before going to bed. Take this medicine only when you can stay in bed for a full night (at least 7 hours).
The dose of Lemborexant will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your response to the medication.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, provided that you have the opportunity to get a full night of sleep (at least 7 hours) before your planned time of awakening.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have narcolepsy (long-term sleep disorder that causes a person to suddenly fall asleep) as Lemborexant may not be suitable for you.
Do not take this medicine with certain medicines used to treat tuberculosis, fungal, bacterial or HIV infection, certain medicines for sleep disorder, high blood pressure, and epilepsy (fits or seizures). Please see the section "Can I take this with other medicines?" below for more information.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- depression
- history of drug dependence or abuse
- lung problems e.g. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (long-term lung disease that causes airflow obstruction making it hard to breathe)
- sleep apnoea (sleep disorder that causes interrupted breathing during sleep)
- liver disease
- severe kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Lemborexant to the elderly. Elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Your doctor may need to perform blood tests to make sure that your liver and kidney function is normal before you take this medicine and thereafter depending on your doctor's advice.
Inform your doctor if your sleep problem worsens or is not improving within 7 to 10 days.
Practice good sleeping habits to reduce reliance on sleeping pills. These are some good sleeping habits which you should follow:
- Try to relax before bedtime. Do not engage in strenuous activities.
- Try to go to bed at about the same time every night.
- Have a light dinner. A heavy dinner may disturb your sleep.
- Avoid caffeine in the evening. Caffeine-containing food and drinks include coffee, tea, certain soft drinks and even chocolate.
- Avoid drinking alcohol before bedtime.
- Keep your bedroom quiet, dark and airy.
- Avoid taking naps especially in the late afternoon.
Lemborexant may cause drowsiness or problems in staying alert at daytime. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, tiredness, and having abnormal dreams or nightmares.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- having thoughts of self-harm
- worsening of your depression
- unusual sleep behaviours that may not be remembered the next morning e.g. sleep-walking, sleep-driving, making phone calls, preparing or eating food
- temporary inability to move or talk while going to sleep or waking up
- temporary leg weakness during the day or at night
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Lemborexant with the following medicines:
- medicines to treat fungal infection e.g. itraconazole, fluconazole
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. efavirenz, etravirine
- certain antibiotics e.g. clarithromycin
- medicines to treat TB, an infection known as tuberculosis e.g. rifampicin
- modafinil (medicine for sleep disorder)
- medicines for fits or seizures e.g. carbamazepine
- verapamil (medicine for high blood pressure)
- bosentan (medicine for high blood pressure in the blood vessels leading to the lungs)
- St. John's wort (herbal medicine)
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- ranitidine (medicine that reduces stomach acid production)
- bupropion (medicine for smoking cessation)
- strong painkillers e.g. methadone
- chlorzoxazone (medicine for muscle spasms)
- certain medicines to treat anxiety
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Lemborexant.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol. Alcohol intake may worsen the drowsiness caused by Lemborexant.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from moisture.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
