Ketoconazole is used to treat fungal infections of the skin, seborrheic dermatitis (a skin condition that causes scaly patches, red skin and dandruff on the scalp), and dandruff (a skin condition caused by flaking of skin on scalp).
Apply Ketoconazole exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not apply more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a cream, foam or shampoo.
If you are using the cream, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry affected area before application.
- Rub Ketoconazole gently on the affected area until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube.
If you are using the foam, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Turn the container upside-down and put small amount of the medicine onto a saucer or other cool surface. Do not place it directly into your hands.
- Pick up small amounts of Ketoconazole using your fingertips then gently rub on the affected area until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
If you are using the shampoo, follow these steps:
- Wash your hair before using the shampoo.
- Apply Ketoconazole gently onto the scalp then leave it for 3-5 minutes. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Rinse your hair and scalp thoroughly then let your hair dry.
- Wash your hands after using.
Avoid contact with your eyes or mouth. Rinse immediately with water if this medicine gets into your eyes or mouth. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.
Avoid use of shampoo within 48 hours of applying hair dye, straightening or waving preparations.
Avoid exposure to open flame or other source of ignition during or after application.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the severity of your condition.
Ketoconazole must be used regularly for it to be effective. Continue using this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop using it unless instructed by your doctor.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not use this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Ketoconazole or other similar medicines for fungal infection such as miconazole.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Maintain good hygiene as this is important in managing fungal infections.
Keep a towel or flannel for your own use. Do not share clothing especially those that come into direct contact with the affected area, such as socks. Wash them properly and change them frequently to avoid spreading the infection to other areas of your body or to other people.
Ketoconazole may cause any of the following side effects: oily or dry hair, unusual hair loss, skin irritation such as burning sensation, itching, swelling, redness, dryness and rashes on the application site.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen face, eyes, mouth or throat, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are using creams or ointments containing steroids (anti-inflammatory medicines) such as hydrocortisone on the affected area.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place, away from the reach of children.
Store the topical foam at temperature between 20-25°C. Keep away from direct sunlight, heat, open flame, or while smoking. Do not puncture the container.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
