Why do I need this medicine?
Fosfomycin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain urinary tract infection in women. It can also be used to prevent urinary tract infections when you undergo surgery or procedures for urinary problems.

This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Fosfomycin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take this medicine on an empty stomach, at least 2-3 hours before or after a meal, preferably before bedtime after emptying the bladder.

Fosfomycin comes as a sachet of granules. Empty the contents of the sachet into a glass. Add an appropriate amount of water then stir to dissolve. Drink the solution immediately.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your infection.

Take Fosfomycin at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take Fosfomycin if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • severe kidney disease
  • undergoing haemodialysis (a procedure used to filter the blood when the kidneys are not functioning)
as Fosfomycin may not be suitable for you.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Fosfomycin to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
What side effects could I experience?
Fosfomycin may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other side effects include any of the following: diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, vaginal itching or irritation, and headache.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes or mouth
  • severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, accompanied by stomach pain or fever
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, dark coloured urine, tiredness, swelling in the legs and ankles
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • medicines for nausea or vomiting e.g. metoclopramide, domperidone
  • bethanechol (medicine for urinary problems)
  • cisapride (medicine used to treat "heartburn", a burning pain in your chest caused by food or acid from your stomach that backs up into your mouth)
  • medicines for constipation
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Fosfomycin.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
