Epoprostenol is used to treat high blood pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs.
Epoprostenol injection is to be given intravenously (into the vein). It is delivered directly into the bloodstream via the blood vessel.
Use Epoprostenol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Your first treatment of this medicine will be given to you in a hospital for the doctor to monitor and find the right dose for you.
Your doctor or nurse will show you how to properly prepare and use Epoprostenol if you plan to treat yourself at home. Follow the instructions of your doctor or nurse carefully.
Epoprostenol must be used regularly for it to be effective. Continue using this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop using it unless instructed by the doctor.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist immediately if you missed a dose.
Alert your doctor if you have heart disease as Epoprostenol may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have any condition that may increase the risk of bleeding.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
You may need to monitor your heart rate and blood pressure regularly as Epoprostenol may cause irregular heart rate or low blood pressure.
Epoprostenol may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other common side effects of Epoprostenol include any of the following: headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and flushing.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:
- increased heart rate
- chest pain
- fevers or chills
- frequent or longer periods of bleeding.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Alert your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for the heart e.g. digoxin
- medicines for high blood pressure
- blood thinning medicines
- pain medicines
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Epoprostenol.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
