Dithranol is used on its own or together with other medicines to treat psoriasis (a type of skin disease that is caused by itchy patches of thick, red skin and silvery scales).
This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Apply Dithranol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a cream or shampoo.
If you are using the cream, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry affected area before application.
- Rub Dithranol gently on the skin or scalp. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube or container.
If you are using the shampoo:
- Wash your hands.
- Wet hair and scalp.
- Lather well and leave on as instructed.
- Rinse well.
Avoid contact with eyes or mouth. Rinse immediately with water if this medicine gets into your eyes or mouth. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes or have accidentally swallowed this medicine.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your condition.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to apply your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not apply on areas that are inflamed, very tender or discharging fluid or pus.
Do not apply on the face, genitalia or folded skin (including armpits or under the breasts) unless directed by your doctor.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to a child.
Dithranol will stain the skin, hair and nails, but will gradually disappear within a few days after stopping your treatment. You may use disposable gloves when applying this medicine. Avoid contact with fabrics, plastics and other materials as Dithranol may permanently stain them.
Certain factors such as dry and cold weather, stress, trauma to the skin, infections, alcohol, and smoking can trigger or worsen psoriasis. Take good care of your skin by keeping it clean, moisturised and free from cuts and infections. Avoid going out during dry and cold weather. Learn to manage your stress, avoid alcohol, and quit smoking. Regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight are also good for your overall health and wellness.
Dithranol may cause any of the following side effects: redness, irritation, burning sensation, soreness, warmth and temporary staining on application site.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- anti-inflammatory medicines (long-term use) e.g. hydrocortisone, betamethasone
- medicines that increase sensitivity to sunlight e.g. amiodarone
- medicines containing propylene glycol (a liquid substance used as a solvent to a variety of products e.g. cosmetics, medicines)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Dithranol.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
