Dicycloverine is used to relieve cramps of the stomach or intestine, particularly spasms that can be associated with irritable bowel syndrome (a disorder that involves abdominal pain and changes in bowel movement such as constipation or diarrhoea).
Take Dicycloverine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
This medicine is available as a capsule, tablet or oral solution.
If you are taking an oral solution, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- intestinal obstruction (blocked bowel)
- reflux oesophagitis (inflammation of the lining of the oesophagus due to stomach acid reflux)
- severe inflammation of the large intestines (large bowel)
- unstable heart condition
- glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
- urinary tract obstruction (blocked urination)
- myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness)
- severe diarrhoea caused by a certain bacterium called Salmonella
as Dicycloverine may not be suitable for you.
Do not give this medicine to infants below 6 months of age unless instructed to do so by the doctor.
Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with this medicine.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- heart diseases e.g. heart failure, abnormal heart rhythm, narrowing of the blood vessels of the heart
- high blood pressure
- overactive thyroid
- nerve damage (autonomic neuropathy)
- enlarged prostate gland
- mild to moderate inflammation of the large intestines (large bowel)
- fever
- mental illness
- kidney disease
- liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant.
If you are going to have a heart operation, inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to a child or the elderly. Children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.
For as long as you are taking this medicine, you may need your urinary tract and stomach condition checked regularly. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
Dicycloverine may cause drowsiness or blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or need to see clearly.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, unusual thirst, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, dry mouth, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, stuffy nose, difficulty urinating, rash, sudden reddening of the skin, sensitivity of the eye to light exposures, dilation of the pupil of the eye, and shortness of breath.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Inform your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- disturbed state of mind, seeing things that don't exist (hallucinations), restlessness
- unusual diarrhoea
Dicycloverine reduces the ability of your body to sweat. Avoid exposure to excessive sunlight or exercise which may cause your body to overheat as you are not able to sweat. Increase your fluid intake and stay in a cool environment.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- amantadine (medicine to treat Parkinson’s disease [disorder that affects the movement of a person])
- medicines for allergy
- medicines for mood disorders e.g. phenothiazines
- medicines to treat anxiety
- medicines to treat depression
- medicines for chest pain e.g. nitroglycerin
- meperidine (strong painkiller)
- medicines to treat glaucoma
- antacids (medicine that reduces stomach acid production)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Dicycloverine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Protect from direct sunlight.
