Rheumatic & collagen, skin, allergic (bronchial asthma unresponsive to conventional treatment), resp apparatus, eye, blood, digestive system, kidney & liver diseases.

Overdosage

View Defal overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Administration

May be taken with or without food: Avoid taking w/ grapefruit juice.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Stomach ulcer. Bacterial (active Tb) or viral infections (herpes simplex eye disease, herpes zoster, chicken pox) or generalized fungal infections. Patient who is about to be or has recently been vaccinated.

Special Precautions

Reduce dose gradually. Patient w/ heart disease, CHF, high BP, thromboembolic diseases, diseases of the oesophagus, stomach or intestine, DM, emotional disorders, psychosis, epilepsy, glaucoma, hypothyroidism, cirrhosis. Blurred vision or other visual disturbances. Adjust dose in special situations eg, surgery, infections. May cause positive antidoping test result. Contains lactose. Avoid driving & using potentially dangerous machinery. 1st trimester pregnancy. Not recommended for use during breastfeeding. Prolonged use in childn.

Adverse Reactions

GI ulcer; headache, dizziness, restlessness, sleep disorders; healing problems, skin damage; HTN, oedema; wt gain, worsening of DM, amenorrhea; muscle weakness, osteoporosis; eye problems.

Drug Interactions

Diabetes medicines (dose may need to be changed). Effect may be reduced w/ antibiotics eg, rifampicin; medicines for epilepsy & psychiatric treatments eg, phenytoin, phenobarb. Effect may be increased w/ oestrogens or OCs; medicines for HIV eg, ritonavir, cobicistat. May prolong relaxant effect of medicines that cause muscle relaxation. Anticholinesterase medicines used in myasthenia gravis. Decreased immune response to vaccines & toxoids.
