Brodalumab is used to treat plaque psoriasis, a skin disease characterised by thick red patches of the skin covered with silver or white scaly layer.
Brodalumab is to be injected subcutaneously (into the fatty layer under the skin, usually in the thigh, upper arm or abdomen area).
Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you. If you or your caregiver had been given the proper training on the preparation and injection techniques of this medicine, you or your caregiver may do the administration.
Remember to rotate the injection sites. Do not inject into the same area all the time or into areas where skin is tender, bruised, red, hard, thick, scaly or affected by psoriasis. New injection sites should be at least 1.5 inches away from the previous injection site. Do not inject near the navel (belly button).
Brodalumab must be used regularly for it to be effective. Continue using this medicine even when you feel well. Do not stop using it unless instructed by the doctor.
Inject the missed dose as soon as you remember and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you forgot to administer your dose.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- Crohn’s disease (long-term inflammatory disease of the digestive tract)
- TB (a lung infection known as tuberculosis)
as Brodalumab may not be suitable for you.
Alert your doctor if you have been recently vaccinated.
You must avoid any vaccinations without consulting with your doctor.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- depression or suicidal behaviour
- other infection
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor may need to evaluate your TB infection before giving you this medicine. He may also need to monitor signs of infection and any unusual changes in your mood or behaviour.
Brodalumab may cause any of the following side effects: headache, diarrhoea, nausea, tiredness, mouth or throat pain, muscles and joint pain, flu, frequent and persistent sore throat with fever, scaling, blisters, itchy, burning rash on feet or groin; white patches on roof of the mouth, inner cheeks, tongue or throat; redness and intense itching on the skin.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Inform your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- unusual changes in mood or behaviour (being too depressed, agitated, or having compulsive and impulsive behaviour)
- having thoughts of self-harm
- coughing, nasal discomfort or congestion, fever
- frequent or intense urge to urinate, cloudy, dark, bloody or strange-smelling urine
- frequent, recurring diarrhoea, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, stomach pain and cramps
- lack of energy, sensitivity to light, hallucinations
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Avoid vaccinations during treatment or 3 months after treatment with Brodalumab.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking medicine used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. ciclosporin.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in the refrigerator, between 2-8°C. Protect from light.
Do not freeze Brodalumab otherwise, it will no longer be effective and should not be used.
If you notice that the injection has changed colour or has become cloudy, do not use it. Throw it away and use a new injection.
Each pre-filled syringe is for single use only. Once opened, use the pre-filled syringes immediately. Throw away any unused solution.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
