Purified tetanus toxoid

Indications/Uses

Active immunization to against tetanus & prevention of neonatal tetanus by immunizing women of child-bearing age.

Dosage/Direction for Use

May be given at the same time as BCG, measles, rubella, mumps, polio (OPC or IPV), hepatitis B, H. influenzae type b & yellow fever vaccine & vit A supplementation. IM Immunization schedule: Prevention of tetanus/neonatal tetanus 2 primary doses of 0.5 mL at least 4 wk apart followed by 3rd dose at least 6 mth after. To maintain immunity through child-bearing period, give 4th dose at least 1 yr after 3rd dose & 5th dose at least 1 yr after 4th dose. Previously non-immunized pregnant women 2 doses at least 4 wk apart w/ 2nd dose given at least 2 wk before childbirth. Previously unimmunized person at risk of developing tetanus At least 2 doses w/ at least 1 mth interval followed by additional booster doses.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Severe reaction to previous dose of tetanus toxoid immunization. Fever or acute infection.

Special Precautions

Immunize HIV-infected persons (whether asymptomatic or symptomatic) according to standard schedules.
