Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 3-6 tsp daily. Long-term therapy: 1.5-6 tsp daily. Childn up to 14 yr Initially 3 tsp daily. Long-term therapy: 1-2 tsp daily. Infants & toddlers Initially 1-2 tsp daily. Long-term therapy: 1 tsp daily. Chronic constipation 3-9 tsp. Damage intestinal flora (eg following long-term antibiotic treatment) Adult 1-2 tsp daily. Childn 1 tsp daily. Reduction of blood ammonia level in hepatopathy Max: 18-30 tsp daily; Pre-coma Max: 30 tsp daily. Gum disease & paradontopathy Adult 3-6 tsp daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to galactose or lactose. Patients on galactose-free diet. Gastrocardial symptom complex, suspected intestinal obstruction.
Special Precautions
Patients requiring a galactose-free diet. Discontinue treatment if diarrhoea occurs in diabetics. Avoid excessive intake of foods & carbonated drinks that cause flatulence. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Flatulence; diarrhoea, loss of electrolytes primarily K (overdosage).
Drug Interactions
Intensified glycosidic effect of cardiac glycosides by K deficiency in abuse.
