Ambroxol is used for lung conditions associated with abnormal, thick, and viscous mucus secretions (phlegm).
This medicine works by making the phlegm less sticky and thick so that it can be coughed up more easily.
Ambroxol may also be used for the relief of sore throat.
Take Ambroxol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take it together with food or immediately after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.
This medicine is available as a conventional tablet, sustained-release or retard capsule, lozenge, and as an oral syrup or drops.
If you are taking the oral syrup or drops, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon, cup or dropper provided to measure your prescribed dose. The oral drops may be mixed with water, milk, or juice. Once it is mixed, drink it immediately.
If you are taking the sustained-release or retard type of capsule (usually labelled as "SR" or "Retard"), swallow it whole with a glass of water. Do not divide, chew or crush the capsule.
If you are taking the lozenge, suck the lozenge until the taste become strong, then lodge the lozenge between the gums and cheek. When the taste fades, start sucking it again. Repeat until the lozenge completely dissolves. Do not swallow.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- stomach ulcer
- problems in the air passages of the lungs
- liver disease
- kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Ambroxol is not recommended during the 1st trimester of pregnancy.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Consult your doctor if your symptoms worsen or do not improve within the recommended treatment duration.
Ambroxol may cause any of the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion, heartburn (burning pain in your chest caused by food or acid from your stomach that backs up into your mouth), stomach pain, altered taste, and numbness or dryness of the mouth or throat.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- raised and itchy rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes, mouth or throat
- rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth or eyes accompanied by fever
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking certain antibiotics e.g. amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, doxycycline.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light and excessive heat.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
