Alprostadil injection is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men.
The first injection will be given by your doctor in the clinic so that he can decide on the dose of Alprostadil that is suitable for you. The doctor will then teach you how to administer the injection by yourself at home.
How to administer the injection:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
2. Hold your penis and choose the injection site as instructed by your doctor making sure you avoid any visible veins.
3. Wipe the area with an alcohol swab.
4. Insert the needle into the penis and push the plunger to release the medicine.
5. Remove the needle and press the injection area until the bleeding stops.
An erection should occur within 5 to 20 minutes after injection.
You should always alternate the side of the penis that is injected and also the injection site.
Do not use the needle if it is bent. Use the syringe only once. Do not reuse the syringe. Dispose of it properly as directed by your doctor.
Use Alprostadil injection exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not use more than instructed by your doctor. You should not use Alprostadil injection more than 3 times a week and there should be at least a 24 hour interval between each injection.
Inform your doctor if you do not achieve a satisfactory erection for sexual intercourse or if you have an erection that lasts for more than 1 hour.
Alert your doctor if you have any of these conditions. You should not use Alprostadil injection if you have:
- a deformed penis or an implant inside the penis
- cancer of the bone marrow or red blood cells
- low red or white blood cells
- any medical conditions where sexual activity should be avoided
Do not use Alprostadil injection together with other treatments for erectile dysfunction.
Alprostadil injection is not intended for use by women.
Inform your doctor if you have heart disease or any type of bleeding including stomach ulcers.
You will need to have regular follow-ups with your doctor to check on your dose of Alprostadil and injection technique. Inform your doctor if you notice any redness, lumps or changes to your penis.
Do not donate blood while using Alprostadil and for up to 1 month after stopping treatment.
Alprostadil will not protect you or your partner from sexually transmitted diseases (STD). You should use an appropriate birth control method.
Alprostadil injection may cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Alprostadil injection also commonly causes headache, penile pain, bruising at the injection site and flu-like symptoms.
Alert your doctor immediately if you have an erection that lasts for more than 4 hours.
Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:
- medicines for high blood pressure such as doxazosin
- blood thinning medicines such as warfarin or heparin
- clozapine
- bupropion
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
