Aciclovir is used to treat viral infections such as cold sores and genital herpes caused by herpes virus.
Apply Aciclovir exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a cream or as an ointment. If you are using the cream, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry the affected area before application.
- Rub the cream gently on the skin until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube.
If you are using the ointment, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry the affected area before application.
- Rub the ointment gently on the skin until it disappears. Use a rubber glove or finger cot when applying the ointment to avoid spreading the infection. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube.
Avoid contact with the eyes or the inside of the mouth. Rinse immediately with water if this medicine gets into your eyes or mouth. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.
Avoid unnecessarily rubbing of the affected area to avoid aggravating or transferring the infection.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your infection.
Your doctor will also discuss the use of this medicine as different brands and preparations of Aciclovir may only be used for a specific condition. It can either be used to treat cold sores or genital infections, or for both conditions.
Do not use this medicine for any conditions other than what is prescribed by your doctor.
Aciclovir must be used at regular intervals for it to be effective. Continue using this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop using it unless instructed by the doctor.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
Do not use more than what is instructed by the doctor to make up for the missed dose.
If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Inform your doctor if you have a weak immune system.
Do not use this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen face) to Aciclovir or any similar medicines such as valaciclovir.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid breastfeeding if you have herpes sores on or near your breast.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Aciclovir to a child.
Aciclovir does not reduce your risk of passing herpes infections. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid spreading the infection to others.
If you are going for dental work, inform your dentist that you are using this medicine.
Aciclovir may cause any of the following side effects: dry or cracked lips, dry or flaking skin and local burning, stinging or itching.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop using the medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
