Eat a healthy diet and manage your stress through meditation and exercise. Avoid temptations of drinking alcohol by removing all alcohol in your home and office and distancing yourself from people who drink. Keep away from places and situations that encourage drinking. Get help from friends and family to support you in your goal of abstaining from alcohol. Continue to attend counselling while taking this medicine to reach your goal.
This medicine may cause any of the following side effects: diarrhoea, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, stomach wind, rash, weakness, difficulty sleeping, and anxiety.
Acamprosate may also cause decrease in sex drive and impotence. Discuss with your doctor if you are concerned about these side effects.
Acamprosate may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviour in alcohol dependent patients. If you experience new or sudden changes in mood, behaviour, thoughts or feelings or worsening of your depression with an attempt to harm yourself or others, alert your doctor immediately.
