Albendazole
Indications/Uses
Common worm GUT infections eg, pinworm, hookworm, dwarf & pork/beef tapeworm, threadworm, roundworm, whipworm.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Roundworm, whipworm, hookworm & pinworm Adult & childn >24 mth 400 mg as single dose. Childn 12-24 mth 200 mg as single dose. Threadworm & tapeworm Adult & childn >24 mth 400 mg once daily for 3 consecutive days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Tab may be swallowed whole/chewed/crushed or mixed w/ food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to albendazole or other benzimidazole derivatives. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if clinically significant decreased blood cell counts occur. Increased risk of hepatotoxicity & bone marrow suppression; aplastic anemia & agranulocytosis in patients w/ or w/o underlying hepatic dysfunction. Monitor blood count prior to & every 2 wk during treatment. Examine patients for cysticercosis retinal lesions prior to treatment of neurocysticercosis. Prolonged & high-dose use. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Pre-existing liver disease. Not to be used during pregnancy & lactation. Not to be used in childn <1 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Reversible alopecia, itchiness &/or skin rashes, erythema multiforme & SJS; abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting; low red cell count, leucopenia, pancytopenia, aplastic anaemia, agranulocytosis; transient raised hepatic enzymes, hepatitis, acute liver failure, jaundice, hepatocellular damage; hypersensitivity reactions; dizziness, headache, symptoms associated w/ neurocysticercosis treatment; induced retinal damage; proteinuria; bone pain, fever.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma levels w/ cimetidine, praziquantel, dexamethasone. Increased bioavailability w/ grapefruit juice. Reduced conc w/ phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarb. Reduced intestinal conc w/ chinese ginseng. Inhibited theophylline metabolism.
