Ulipristal is an emergency contraceptive. This medicine decreases the likelihood of pregnancy after an unprotected sex or if there is a failure from your usual birth control method.
This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Ulipristal exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Consider repeating the dose if vomiting occurs 3 hours after administration.
Ulipristal must be taken within 5 days after you had an unprotected sex or if you had a contraceptive failure.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you forget to take Ulipristal after an unprotected sex or contraception failure, let your doctor know.
Do not take Ulipristal if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child.
Do not breastfeed within one week of taking Ulipristal.
Ulipristal is for emergency contraception only. Do not take it as a regular birth control method. You may discuss birth control methods with your doctor or pharmacist.
This medicine does not lower the risk of getting an HIV infection or any other sexually transmitted diseases. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid getting these diseases.
Pregnancy tests must be done before taking this medicine. If you are already pregnant, Ulipristal will not interrupt an existing pregnancy.
Ulipristal may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects may include any of the following: headache, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, back pain, breast tenderness, delayed or irregular menstruation and menstrual pain.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor if you experience severe lower stomach pain as this could be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy in which the fetus develops outside of the womb).
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- birth control pills
- medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine
- medicines for to treat TB (lung infection known as tuberculosis) e.g. rifampicin
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. efavirenz, nevirapine, ritonavir
- medicines for fungal infection e.g. griseofulvin, ketoconazole, itraconazole
- herbal medicines e.g. St. John’s wort
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Ulipristal.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
