Ranibizumab is used to treat eye problems and visual impairment caused by normal ageing process, eye swelling caused by diabetes or blockage of small veins in the retina of the eye, and formation of new blood vessels in the eye.
Ranibizumab is to be given by intravitreal injection (into the eye).
Your eye doctor will administer the injection for you. Your doctor will also give you anaesthesia to prevent any pain you might have with the injection.
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any doses. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Ranibizumab.
If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- eye infections (e.g bacterial/viral conjunctivitis)
- severe eye inflammation (e.g iritis, uveitis)
as Ranibizumab may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- damage in the retina (part of the eye)
- have received previous intravitreal injection
- high eye pressure
- inflammation of the eye
- planned eye surgery
- other infections
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Ranibizumab may cause any of the following side effects: headache, common cold symptoms (e.g runny nose and sore throat), cough, and eye irritation and eye itching.
You may also experience some problems with your eyesight, such as blurred vision. Always keep your doctor updated of any changes in your eyesight. If you cannot see clearly, avoid driving and any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: nausea, anxiety and dizziness.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- excessive pain or discomfort in your eye
- worsening eye redness
- blurred or decrease vision
- increased sensitivity to light
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in the refrigerator, between 2-8°C. Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
