Indications/Uses
Treatment & prophylaxis of herpes genitalis, treatment of herpes zoster, herpes simples & varicella (chickenpox).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Genital herpes infections Initially 200 mg 4 hrly 5 times daily for 10 days. Recurrent infections, intermittent therapy: 200 mg 4 hrly 5 times daily for 5 days. Recurrent infections, chronic suppressive therapy: 400 mg bd or 200 mg 3-5 times daily. Herpes zoster infections 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 days. Varicella infections 20 mg/kg up to 800 mg/dose 5 times daily for 7 days. Childn Varicella infections 20 mg/kg qds. Max: 800 mg. >6 yr 800 mg qds, 2-5 yr 400 mg qds, <2 yr 200 mg qds.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
High doses. Immunocompromised & geriatric patients. Renal impairment. Lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Fever, headache, pain, peripheral oedema, rarely anaphylaxis. Confusion, dizziness, hallucinations, paraesthesia, somnolence, GI disturbances, leucopenia, lymphadenopathy, myalgia, alopecia, pruritus, rash, urticaria, visual abnormalities.
Drug Interactions
Nephrotoxic medications, probenecid.
