Olodaterol is used to treat airflow obstruction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a long-term lung disease that causes shortness of breath and coughing.
This medicine helps relax the airways in your lungs. This will relieve chest tightness, wheezing and cough so that you can breathe more easily.
Use Olodaterol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a solution for inhalation. If you are using the inhaler for the very first time, point the inhaler into the ground and prime until a mist is seen. You should also do this whenever your inhaler has not been used for days. To prepare the inhaler for use after priming, refer to instructions in the manufacturer labelling.
To take a dose using the inhaler, follow these steps:
- Open the cap until it snaps.
- Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your lips firmly around it.
- Breathe in through your mouth. Inhale slowly and deeply while pressing down the inhaler to release a puff of medicine.
- Remove the inhaler from your mouth while holding your breath for 10 seconds.
Make sure you know how to use the inhaler. If you have problems or if you do not understand the instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist to show you how to use it.
Olodaterol must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have asthma without use of a long-term medicine to control it, as Olodaterol may not be suitable for you.
This medicine is not intended to treat asthma.
Inform your doctor if you the following conditions:
- heart disease e.g. irregular or abnormal heartbeat, heart failure
- high blood pressure
- diabetes
- overactive thyroid
- low potassium level in the blood
- epilepsy (fits or seizure)
- aneurysm (abnormal widening of an artery)
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. Routine monitoring of your pulmonary function, blood pressure, heart rate, sugar and potassium level in your blood may be needed while you are being treated with Olodaterol. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
Olodaterol may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: runny or stuffy nose, cough, diarrhoea, back pain, joint pain, and rash.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:
- pain or tightness of chest
- breathlessness
- coughing or wheezing
- signs of low potassium e.g. abnormal heartbeat, muscle pain, weakness, or cramps
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- other similar medicines for breathing problems e.g. arformoterol, formoterol, indacaterol, salmeterol, vilanterol
- medicines to treat depression or mood disorders e.g. citalopram, escitalopram, chlorpromazine, clomipramine, haloperidol
- medicines for heart disease or high blood pressure e.g. atenolol, bisoprolol, carvedilol, labetalol
- diuretics or “water pills” e.g. etacrynate, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, indapamide
This list does not include all medicines which may interact with Olodaterol.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.
Discard and do not use this medicine 3 months after first use.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
