Nabumetone helps relieve pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation in joints of fingers, wrist, feet, ankles) and osteoarthritis (damage of joints’ surfaces).
Take Nabumetone exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine together with food or immediately after a meal. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not take this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Nabumetone or any similar medicines such as naproxen, ibuprofen, diclofenac, and aspirin.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- current or history of stomach ulcers, bleeding, or perforation
- severe heart failure
- severe kidney disease
- severe liver disease
- aspirin-sensitive asthma
as Nabumetone may not be suitable for you.
Do not take Nabumetone if you are on your third trimester of pregnancy.
This medicine should not be used to treat pain before and after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (procedure to improve and restore the blood flow in the heart).
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- liver disease
- kidney disease
- heart disease including those at risk e.g. high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, smoking
- asthma
- fluid retention e.g. swollen feet or ankles
- stomach disorder such as inflammation of the intestine or bowel e.g. ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease
- lupus or systemic lupus erythematosus (autoimmune disease that causes inflammation)
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Nabumetone to an elderly. Elderly may be more sensitive to the side effects.
If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Nabumetone.
Nabumetone may cause drowsiness, dizziness or blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or need to see clearly.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion, stomach wind, pain or discomfort, and tiredness.
This medicine may also cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight. Apply sunscreen when going outdoors and avoid direct or prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and throat
- rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth or eyes accompanied by fever
- chest pain or sudden numbness and confusion
- pass out blood or black, tarry stools or vomit coffee-ground-like vomitus
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- blood-thinning medicine e.g. warfarin
- medicine for mood disorder e.g. lithium
- medicines for high blood pressure e.g. enalapril, valsartan
- medicines for heart disease e.g. digoxin
- medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. ciclosporin, tacrolimus
- anti-inflammatory medicines e.g. hydrocortisone, prednisone
- diuretics or “water pills” e.g. furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide
- medicine to treat rheumatoid arthritis e.g. methotrexate
- certain antibiotics e.g. ciprofloxacin
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. zidovudine
- other medicines for pain and inflammation e.g. diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Nabumetone.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
Keep tablets in their original package to protect from light.
