Meropenem trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Pneumonia including hospital-acquired pneumonia, UTI, intra-abdominal infections, gynaecological infections eg, endometritis & pelvic inflammatory disease, bacterial meningitis, septicaemia. Monotherapy or in combination w/ antiviral or antifungal agents for empiric treatment of presumed infections in patients w/ febrile neutropenia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Adult Pneumonia, UTI, gynaecological, skin & skin structure infections 500 mg every 8 hr. Nosocomial pneumonia, peritonitis, presumed infections in febrile neutropenic patient, septicaemia 1 g every 8 hr Meningitis 2 g every 8 hr. Childn >3 mth & up to 12 yr 10-20 mg/kg every 8 hr, >50 kg Adult dose. Meningitis 40 mg/kg every 8 hr. Febrile episodes in neutropenic patient 20 mg/kg every 8 hr.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if allergic reactions occur. Hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems or other β-lactam antibiotics. Not recommended for MRSA infections. Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Pseudomembranous & antibiotic-associated colitis. Monotherapy in critically ill patients w/ known or suspected Pseudomonas aeruginosa lower resp tract infection. Co-administration w/ potentially nephrotoxic drugs. Monitor transaminase & bilirubin levels in patients w/ hepatic disease. Renal insufficiency. Not to be used during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Local inj site reactions; urticaria, rash, pruritus, erythema multiforme, TEN & SJS; GI disturbances; hematological & hepatic changes; paraesthesiae, headache, seizures; oral & vag candidosis.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc & prolonged elimination t½ w/ probenecid. Reduced valproic acid serum levels.
