Misoprostol is used to treat ulcers in the stomach and duodenum (upper portion of the small intestine). This medicine is also used in the prevention of stomach ulcers associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (medicines for pain and inflammation).
This medicine may also be used in child birth related concerns such as induction of labour and medical termination of pregnancy.
Misoprostol may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Misoprostol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more than instructed by your doctor.
Misoprostol should be taken after meals. Take this medicine at bedtime. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Misoprostol must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
This medicine should not be taken if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with Misoprostol, alert your doctor immediately. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child. You must use proven birth control methods while taking Misoprostol.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- heart disease
- low blood pressure
- kidney disease
- inflammatory disease of the intestines/bowel
- dehydration
Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding.
Misoprostol may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
This medicine may cause any of the following stomach and intestine related side effects:
- stomach pain
- constipation
- diarrhoea
- indigestion
- stomach wind
- nausea
- vomiting
- headache
- rashes
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience abnormal vaginal bleeding including heavy bleeding at menstruation and vaginal bleeding other than during normal menstruation.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking medicines used to induced labor and control bleeding after child birth (e.g. oxytocin, carbetocin).
Misoprostol should not be taken with with magnesium-containing antacids as this type of antacid could reduce the effectiveness of this medicine. If you must take antacids, take the magnesium-free preparations (e.g aluminium-containing antacids).
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
