Mirabegron is used to treat the symptoms of overactive bladder (a disorder that causes a sudden or frequent urge to urinate).
This medicine calms and relaxes the bladder. It reduces the number of toilet visits and the urge to urinate.
Mirabegron may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Mirabegron exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
To take the prolonged-release or extended-release type of tablet, swallow it whole with a glass of water. Do not divide, chew or crush the tablet.
The dose of Mirabegron will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your response to the medication.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have very high uncontrolled blood pressure as Mirabegron may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- controlled high blood pressure
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- enlarged prostate gland
- blocked bladder which causes difficulty in passing urine or a weak stream of urine
- history of heart rhythm disorder
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
It is important that you do not get pregnant while being treated with Mirabegron. You may wish to discuss birth control methods with your doctor or pharmacist.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
Your blood pressure may rise to unsafe levels without you noticing it. Monitor your blood pressure regularly during treatment.
Mirabegron may cause any of the following side effects: headache, dizziness, nausea, constipation, indigestion, diarrhoea, dry mouth, joint swelling, back pain, skin rash, and itching.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- swelling of the face, eyes, throat, and lips
- fast and irregular heartbeat
- pain or difficulty when passing urine, feeling the need to pass urine often or right away, pain or swelling of the lower abdomen
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- other medicines for overactive bladder e.g. solifenacin, tolterodine, darifenacin
- medicines to treat depression e.g. imipramine, desipramine
- medicines for irregular heartbeat e.g. flecainide, propafenone
- medicines used for high blood pressure and heart disease e.g. digoxin, metoprolol
- medicines to treat fungal infections e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole
- blood-thinning medicines e.g. warfarin, dabigatran
- clarithromycin (certain antibiotic)
- thioridazine (medicine for mood disorders)
- ritonavir (medicine for HIV infection)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Mirabegron.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
