Ivermectin is used to treat parasitic worm infections caused by certain types of roundworms.
This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Ivermectin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take it on an empty stomach, at least 2 hours before or after a meal.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the course of treatment depending on the type of your infection.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not take Ivermectin if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- infection caused by a parasite known as Loa loa
- weakened immune system e.g. HIV infection
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Ivermectin to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Practice good hygiene to reduce the chances of getting infected again. Wash your hands before eating and after using the toilet.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. Routine tests (e.g. parasite count on the skin and eye, eye or stool examination) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
Ivermectin may cause any of the following side effects: dizziness, sleepiness, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, constipation, vomiting, tiredness, and tremors.
This medicine may cause your blood pressure to fall suddenly when you get up from a sitting or lying down position and you may feel giddy. To minimise this problem, stand up slowly.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- joint pain, fever, swollen and tender lymph nodes, fast heartbeat, skin itching, swelling of the face, ankles, feet or hands
- sudden loss or blurring of vision
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking warfarin (blood-thinning medicine).
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
