Indacaterol is used to manage breathing problems caused by lung disease such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
It is a bronchodilator which helps to treat airflow obstruction by relaxing the airways of the lungs, relieving chest tightness, wheezing, and cough so you can breathe more easily.
Use this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Indacaterol is available as capsules for oral inhalation. Do not swallow the capsules.
To use Indacaterol, follow these steps:
- Pull off the cap of the inhaler. To open the inhaler, hold the base of the inhaler firmly and tilt the mouthpiece.
- Immediately before use, remove the capsules from the blister and place it in the capsule chamber.
- Close the inhaler until you hear a clicking sound.
- Hold the inhaler upright and pierce the capsule by pressing the side buttons (located at the base of the inhaler) at the same time. You will hear another clicking sound as the capsule is being pierced. Release the side buttons fully.
- Breath out, place the mouthpiece in your mouth then breath in rapidly but steadily and as deeply as you can.
- Hold your breath for 5-10 seconds while taking the inhaler out of your mouth then breath out.
- Close the inhaler.
- Remove the empty capsule from the chamber then throw it in the household waste.
- Close the inhaler then replace the cap.
If you miss a dose of Indacaterol, use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have asthma and you haven’t use any long-term asthma control medication as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- heart disease e.g. hypertension, irregular heartbeat
- diabetes
- thyroid disorder e.g. overactive thyroid gland
- epilepsy (fits or seizures)
- low levels of potassium in the blood
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Indacaterol will not relieve sudden (acute) asthma attacks. Your doctor will provide you another medicine for this.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition (e.g. blood potassium, blood glucose, blood pressure, heart rate) and check your response to the medication regularly. Your doctor may also need to do routine lung function tests while you are being treated with this medicine.
Indacaterol may cause any of the following side effects: cough, throat pain, sore throat, headache and nausea.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease e.g. propranolol
- medicines for glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye) e.g. timolol
- diuretics or “water pills” e.g. hydrochlorothiazide
- medicines for depression such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors e.g. isocarboxacid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Indacaterol.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
