Fluconazole
Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of cryptococcal meningitis & other cryptococcal infections; treatment of vag, oropharyngeal & other forms of candidiasis; prevention of fungal infections in immunocompromised patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Vag candidiasis 150 mg as single dose. Oropharyngeal candidiasis 50 mg once daily for 7-14 days. Max: 14 days except in severely immunocompromised patients. Atrophic oral candidiasis associated w/ dentures 50 mg once daily for 14 days concurrently w/ local antiseptic. Other candidal mucosal infections 50 mg daily for 14-30 days, may be increased to 100 mg daily. Candidemia, disseminated candidiasis & other invasive candidal infections Initially 400 mg followed by 200 mg daily, may be increased to 400 mg daily. Cryptococcal meningitis & cryptococcal infections at other sites Initially 400 mg followed by 200-400 mg daily for 6-8 wk. Prevention of relapse of cryptococcal meningitis in patient w/ AIDS 200 mg daily after full course of primary therapy. Prevention of fungal infections in immunocompromised patient considered at risk as consequence of HIV infections or neutropenia following cytotoxic chemotherapy, RT or bone marrow transplant 50 mg daily or 100 mg daily. Tinea pedis 150 mg wkly for 2-6 wk. Tinea corporis or cruris 150 mg wkly for 2-4 wk.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to related azole compds.
Special Precautions
Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, rash.
Drug Interactions
Terfenadine, cisapride, anticoagulants, sulfonylureas, phenytoin, rifampicin, cyclosporin, theophylline, rifabutin, tacrolimus, zidovudine.
