Flurbiprofen helps relieve pain and inflammation associated with joint disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation in joints of fingers, wrist, feet, ankles), osteoarthritis (joint pain and swelling due to bone damage or deterioration), ankylosing spondylitis (inflammation of the joints of your spine), sprains and strains.
This medicine may also be used to help relieve pain associated with menstrual period or sore throat.
Flurbiprofen may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Flurbiprofen exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take it together with food or immediately after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.
It may also be taken with antacid (a medicine used to neutralise acid) or a glass of milk to minimise stomach discomfort.
This medicine is available as a tablet or lozenge.
If you are taking the lozenge, suck the lozenge until the taste become strong, then lodge the lozenge between the gums and cheek. When the taste fades, start sucking it again. Repeat until the lozenge completely dissolves. Do not swallow the lozenge. Avoid coffee, acidic drinks or soft drinks for 15 minutes prior to taking the lozenge.
You may stop taking Flurbiprofen when you have no more pain. Take it only when you need to.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Do not take Flurbiprofen if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine, other similar painkillers such as ibuprofen, celecoxib, or aspirin.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- stomach ulcer or bleeding
- history of or presently have ulcerative colitis (inflammation of the large intestines) or Crohn’s disease (long-term inflammatory disease of the digestive tract)
- severe heart disease
- severe kidney disease
- severe liver disease
as Flurbiprofen may not be suitable for you.
Do not take this medicine if you are on your 3rd trimester of pregnancy.
This medicine should not be used to treat pain before and after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (procedure to improve and restore the blood flow in the heart).
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- mild to moderate kidney disease
- mild to moderate liver disease
- history of heart disease e.g. heart failure, stroke
- high blood pressure
- high cholesterol level
- diabetes
- lupus or systemic lupus erythematosus (autoimmune disease that causes inflammation)
- asthma
- dehydration
- low blood volume
- smoker
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to an elderly. Elderly may be more sensitive to the side effects.
If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Flurbiprofen.
Genes may affect an individual’s response to certain medicines. Researchers say that individuals with
CYP2C9*1/*3 genes may need to lower flurbiprofen doses than the usual standard dose. Although not routinely done, your doctor may advise you to take genetic testing to check if this medicine is best suited for you. If you know you have this gene type, inform your doctor.
For as long as you are taking this medicine, you may need to have regular blood tests to check the health of your kidney and liver. Your doctor will advise you about how often you may need to have these tests.
Flurbiprofen may cause drowsiness, dizziness or blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or need to see clearly.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhoea, stomach wind, tiredness, and rash.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth or eyes accompanied by fever
- pass out blood or black, tarry stools or vomit coffee-ground-like vomitus
- unusual bleeding or bruising
- yellowing of the skin and white of the eyes
- chest pain, shortness of breath
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop taking this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Flurbiprofen with other NSAIDs (medicine for pain and inflammation) e.g. ibuprofen, celecoxib, or aspirin.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines to treat depression e.g. fluoxetine, paroxetine
- blood-thinning medicines e.g. warfarin
- anti-inflammatory medicines e.g. prednisone, dexamethasone, hydrocortisone
- medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. tacrolimus, ciclosporin
- methotrexate (medicine used to treat certain types of cancer)
- medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease e.g. captopril, losartan, metoprolol, digoxin
- medicines for water retention (water pills) e.g. furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, spironolactone
- phenytoin (medicine for epilepsy/fits or seizure)
- lithium (medicine for mood disorder)
- zidovudine (medicine for HIV infection)
- other medicine such as mifepristone
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Flurbiprofen.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
