Finerenone - oral

Patient Medicine Information
Why do I need this medicine?
Finerenone is used to lower the risk of worsening kidney problems, heart attack, and hospitalisation for heart failure in individuals with long-term kidney disease associated with type 2 diabetes (a long-term condition in which the body gradually becomes resistant to the effects of insulin, or the pancreas does not produce enough insulin).
How do I take this medicine?
Take Finerenone exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. If you have difficulty swallowing the tablet, you may crush the tablet and mix it with water or soft foods, such as applesauce. Stir and consume the mixture immediately. Try to take it at the same time each day.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the severity of your condition.

Finerenone must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day you missed the dose. If you miss a day, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have adrenal insufficiency (a rare disorder where the adrenal glands produce insufficient amounts of certain hormones) as Finerenone may not be suitable for you.

Do not take Finerenone with certain medicines to treat fungal infection, HIV infection, depression, and certain antibiotics. Please see the section "Can I take this with other medicines?" below for more information.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • currently have or have had high potassium levels in the blood
  • moderate or severe liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant.

It is important that you do not get pregnant while being treated with this medicine. You must use proven birth control methods during Finerenone therapy. You may wish to discuss birth control methods with your doctor or pharmacist.

Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Your doctor may advise you to avoid breastfeeding while taking this medicine and for 1 day after stopping the treatment.

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.

Routine tests (e.g. kidney and liver function, potassium levels in the blood) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
What side effects could I experience?
