Balsalazide - oral

Patient Medicine Information
Why do I need this medicine?
Balsalazide is used to treat ulcerative colitis (a disease that causes inflammation and sores in the linings of the large intestine and rectum).
How do I take this medicine?
Take Balsalazide exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water or it may be opened and sprinkled on applesauce. The applesauce mixture may be chewed and should be swallowed immediately. Do not store the mixture for later use. Try to take it at the same time each day.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your condition and response to the medication.

Balsalazide must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take Balsalazide if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or similar medicines such as mesalazine, aspirin or other salicylates.

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • severe liver disease
  • moderate to severe kidney disease
as Balsalazide may not be suitable for you.

  • atopic dermatitis or eczema (a skin condition characterised by patches of red and itchy skin)
  • mild to moderate liver disease
  • mild kidney disease or history of kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Balsalazide to a child or the elderly. Children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.

If you are going to have certain laboratory tests (e.g. urinary test for normetanephrine levels), inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine.

While you are being treated with Balsalazide, make sure to drink an adequate amount of water or other fluids to minimise the risk of kidney stone formation.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
