Azithromycin
Indications/Uses
Upper & lower resp tract, skin & soft structure infections. Nongonococcal urethritis & cervicitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult, elderly & childn >16 yr Resp tract, skin & skin structure infections Day 1: 500 mg daily as a single dose. Day 2-5: 250 mg daily. Nongonococcal urethritis & cervicitis 100 mg daily as a single dose.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to erythromycin, azithromycin & other macrolides. Impaired liver function.
Special Precautions
Childn <16 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Allergic reactions, acute interstitial nephritis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, melena, cholestatic jaundice, palpitation, chest pain, monilliasis, vaginitis, nephritis, dizziness, headache, vertigo, drowsiness, fatigue, reversible increased transaminase.
Drug Interactions
Antacids, antihistamines, theophylline, anticoagulant, carbamazepine, cyclosporines, digoxin.
