Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment of duodenal ulcer unresponsive to H2-receptor antagonist & of gastric ulcer. Treatment of erosive/ulcerative reflux esophagitis diagnosed through endoscopy. Long-term treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Recommended dosage: 20 or 40 mg once daily. Duration of Therapy: Duodenal ulcer: 2 wk. Gastric ulcer or erosive/ulcerative reflux esophagitis: 4 wk. Patients w/ inadequate response to other therapies 40 mg once daily, may take 4 wk (duodenal ulcer) or 8 wk (gastric ulcer or erosive/reflux esophagitis). Zollinger-Ellison syndrome Initially 20-160 mg once daily. Doses >80 mg daily should be divided & given twice daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately before a meal.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Sustained hypochlorhydria & hypergastrinemia (long-term use). Monitor presence of bacterial overgrowth in GIT. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
ECL cell growth (large doses & long-term use).
Drug Interactions
Diazepam, warfarin or phenytoin; ketoconazole, ampicillin, esters & Fe salts.
