Indications/Uses
Patients ≥16 yr w/ mild to moderate infections due to sensitive microorganisms eg, tonsilitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, skin & soft tissue infections, urethritis, cervicitis related w/ C. trachomatis, U. urealyticum & N. gonorrhoeae.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult STD 1 g as a single dose. Other indications 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg daily from day 2-5. Total dose: 1.5 g.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Not for pneumonia, out-patients. Patients w/ acquired nosocomial infections, known bacteremia. Patients who require hospitalization, debilitated patients. Patients w/ serious health problems eg, immunodeficiency disease or functional asplenia. Impaired liver or kidney functions. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <16 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, melena, cholestatic jaundice; palpitation, chest pain; moniliasis, vaginitis, nephritis; dizziness, headache, vertigo, somnolence; fatigue; rash, photosensitivity, angioedema; transient increase of neutrophil count & liver enzyme.
Drug Interactions
May cause ergotism w/ ergot derivatives. Should be taken at least 1 hr before or 2 hr after administration of antacids. Prothrombin time should be monitored when used concomitantly w/ warfarin. May impair metabolism of cyclosporin. May enhance digoxin level.
