Azithromycin dihydrate
Indications/Uses
Upper & lower resp tract, skin & skin structure infections, non-gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
≥16 yr, elderly 1st day: 500 mg as a single dose; Day 2-5: 250 mg once daily; Total dose: 1,500 mg. STD due to Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae 1 g as a single dose.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals or Al- & Mg-containing antacids.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin or other macrolides.
Special Precautions
May change normal flora in the colon & may cause overgrowth of Clostridium. Avoid concomitant use w/ antacids or ergot derivatives. Not for outpatients w/ pneumonia who cannot receive oral treatment. Patients w/ hepatic or severe renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal pain, flatulence, melena, angioedema, cholestatic jaundice, palpitation, chest pain, moniliasis, vaginitis, nephritis, dizziness, headache, vertigo, drowsiness, fatigue, reversible increase in transaminase.
Drug Interactions
Al- & Mg-containing antacids, theophylline, warfarin, digoxin, ergotamine/dihydroergotamine, triazolam, carbamazepine, cyclosporin, hexobarbital, phenytoin.
