Ceftazidime pentahydrate
Indications/Uses
Listed in Dosage.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 g IV/IM 8-12 hrly. Uncomplicated UTI 250 mg IV/IM 12 hrly. Bone & joint infections 2 g IV 12 hrly. Complicated UTI 500 mg IV/IM 8-12 hrly. Uncomplicated pneumonia; mild skin & skin structure infections 500 mg to 1 g IV/IM 8 hrly. Serious gynecological & intra-abdominal infections; meningitis; severe life-threatening infections 2 g IV 8 hrly. Pseudomonas infections & cystic fibrosis 30-50 mg/kg IV up to a max: 6 g/day 8 hrly. Infant & childn 1 mth-12 yr 30-50 mg/kg IV to a max: 6 g/day 8 hrly. Neonate 30 mg/kg IV 12 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to β-lactam antibiotics. Prolonged use; history of GI disease especially colitis, renal insufficiency. Lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis (IV), pain &/or inflammation (IM), hypersensitivity & GI reactions; candidiasis, vaginitis; CNS effects; transient hematological changes.
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides, furosemide, chloramphenicol.
