Fluconazole
Indications/Uses
Oropharyngeal, oesophageal or vulvovaginal candidiasis & serious systemic candidal infection. Meningitis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Oropharyngeal candidiasis Adult 50 mg once daily for 1-2 wk. Oesophageal candidiasis 50 mg once daily for 14-30 days. Vulvovag candidiasis Adult 150 mg as a single dose. Systemic candidiasis Adult 1st day: 400 mg as single dose then 200 mg once daily for 4 wk & 2 wk following resolution of symptom. Cryptococcal meningitis Adult 1st day: 400 mg as a single dose then 200-400 mg once daily for 10-12 wk after CSF is sterile. Suppression of relapse in patients w/ AIDS Maintenance: 200 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Discontinue therapy if liver disease develop. Alternative antifungal therapy may be required in patients w/ overgrowth of nonsusceptible strains of candida. Pregnancy. Childn <16 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea & skin rash.
Drug Interactions
Astemizole, terfenadine; coumarin anticoagulants, sulfonylurea; phenytoin; OC; rifampicin.
