Pantoprazole
Indications/Uses
Duodenal & gastric ulcer. Moderate to severe reflux esophagitis. Pathological hypersecretory conditions associated w/ Zollinger-Ellison syndrome or other malignancies.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Duodenal & gastric ulcer, moderate to severe reflux esophagitis 40 mg daily. Long-term therapy for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome & other pathological hypersecretory condition Initially 80 mg & may be increased or decreased depending on gastric acid secretion. Doses >80 mg daily should be given in 2 divided doses. May be given up to >160 mg but should not be used for long-term medication. Patient w/ severe liver impairment 20 mg. Elderly & patient w/ renal impairment Max: 40 mg daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Recommended only if PO is not appropriate. Not for mild GI complaints ie, nervous dyspepsia. Exclude diagnosis of malignant gastric ulcer or any malignancy in esophagus prior to therapy. Confirm diagnosis of reflux esophagitis by endoscopy. Discontinue use if liver enzyme levels increase. Renal & hepatic impairment. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI disorder eg, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, nausea/vomiting, dry mouth.
Drug Interactions
Monitor prothrombin time in patients taking anticoagulants eg, coumarin.
