Erythromycin (cap: stearate; dry syr: ethylsuccinate)
Indications/Uses
Mild to moderate upper & lower resp tract, skin & soft tissue infections. Intestinal amoebiasis. Treatment of syphilis in patients w/ allergy to penicillin. Non-gonococcal urethritis in patients w/ contraindication & intolerance w/ tetracycline. Infections due to Chlamydia trachomatis. Listeriosis, pertussis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap Adult 250 mg 6 hrly or 500 mg 12 hrly. Childn 30-50 mg/kg daily in 3-4 divided doses. Dry syr Adult 400 mg 4 times daily or 600-800 mg 12 hrly. Childn 30-80 mg/kg daily in 4 divided doses.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients receiving terfenadine, astemizol, or cisapride. Severe impaired liver function.
Special Precautions
Prolonged use may cause superinfection by nonsusceptible microorganism. Patients w/ impaired kidney & liver function. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, epigastric distress, anorexia.
Drug Interactions
May cause acute intoxication of ergot w/ ergotamine or dihydroergotamine. May increase theophylline serum level w/ theophylline. May increase digoxin serum level w/ digoxin. May enhance anticoagulant effects w/ anticoagulants. May increase carbamazepine toxicity w/ carbamazepine.
