Theophylline
Indications/Uses
Bronchial asthma & other bronchospastic conditions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap Adult 1 cap. Syr Adult & childn >13 yr 3-6 tsp, 7-12 yr 2 tsp, 1-6 yr 1 tsp. Doses to be taken 3 times daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Peptic ulcer, active gastritis. Severe renal or liver impairment.
Special Precautions
Pulmonary, CV, renal or hepatic diseases. Pregnancy, childn, elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI upset, nervousness, urinary frequency.
Drug Interactions
May increase CNS stimulation caused by sympathomimetics & excretion of lithium & phenytoin thus decreasing their effectiveness. Increased theophylline plasma levels may occur w/ cimetidine, allopurinol, erythromycin. Xanthines & β-blockers may be mutually antagonistic. Toxicity of digitalis may be enhanced.
