Lactulose
Indications/Uses
Chronic constipation, portal-systemic encephalopathy including hepatic pre-coma & coma conditions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Chronic constipation Adult Severe cases 15 mL twice daily. Moderate cases 15-30 mL. Mild cases 15 mL. Childn 5-10 yr 10 mL twice daily, 1-5 yr 5 mL twice daily. Infant <1 yr 2.5 mL twice daily. Adjuvant dose Adult Severe cases 15-25 mL. Moderate cases 10-15 mL. Mild cases 10 mL. Childn 6-14 yr 10 mL, 1-5 yr 5-10 mL. Infant <1 yr 5 mL. Hepatic pre-coma & coma Initially 30-50 mL 3 times daily. Maintenance daily dose: Adjust w/ patient's condition.
Contraindications
Galactose diet, galactosemia & GI obstruction.
Special Precautions
Diabetes & galactosemia. Pregnancy. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Flatulence; nausea, vomiting; diarrhea, dry mouth (high dose).
