Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Severe asthma or reduced oral corticosteroids Adult, childn ≥12 yr 1-2 mg twice daily. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 0.5-1 mg twice daily. Maintenance Adult 0.5-1 mg twice daily. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 0.25-0.5 mg twice daily.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not for the rapid relied of bronchospasm, treatment of status asthmatics or other acute exacerbations of asthma where intensive measures are required. Transferring from oral corticosteroids to inhaled budesonide. Potential systemic effects of inhaled corticosteroids. HPA axis suppression & adrenal insufficiency. Interpret bone mineral density measurements in childn w/ caution as an increase in bone area in growing children may reflect an increase in bone volume. Perform height measurements to identify patient w/ increased sensitivity. Patient w/ active or quiescent pulmonary TB or fungal, bacterial or viral infections of the resp system. Not to be used w/ +ve pressure delivery systems (eg, IPPB) in pulmonary conditions involving pneumothorax, air cysts or mediastinal emphysema unless special drainage is performed. Severely compromised liver function. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hoarseness, sore, irritated throat, tongue & mouth irritation, dry mouth, oral candidiasis; cough.
Drug Interactions
Increased systemic exposure w/ CYP3A inhibitors (eg, ketoconazole & itraconazole).
