Drospirenone
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 tab daily at the same time of the day. Take 1 white active tab daily for the 1st 24 days then 1 green placebo tab daily for the last 4 days. Take the 1st tab on 1st day of menstrual bleeding. Changing from a combined pill, vag ring or transdermal patch Start on the day after the last active tab of previous pill or on the day of removal of vag ring or transdermal patch. Patient may also start at the latest on the day following the usual tab-free, ring-free, patch-free break or placebo tab interval of previous contraceptive. Take an additional barrier method of contraception during the 1st 7 days. Changing from another progestogen-only pill (POP) May switch any day from other POP & start Slinda the next day. Changing from a progestogen-only inj, implant or from a progestogen-releasing intrauterine system (IUS) Start Slinda the day when the next inj is due or on the day that the implant or IUS is removed. Following delivery Start any day between day 21-28 after delivery.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take at approx the same time each day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Blood clot in a blood vessel eg, legs (DVT) or lungs (pulmonary embolism). Known or suspected sex-steroid sensitive malignancies eg, breast cancer. Unexplained vag bleeding. Renal or hepatic impairment.
Special Precautions
Not a protection against HIV infection (AIDS) or any other STD. Thrombosis, breast cancer, diabetes, high BP. Avoid sun or UV radiation in patients w/ or had chloasma. Seek medical advice if mood changes & depressive symptoms occur. Liver cancer, jaundice. Contains lactose. Hepatic or renal impairment. Not to be used during or possible pregnancy. Slinda is used after menarche.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; nausea, abdominal pain; changes in sexual desire, altered mood; acne; breast discomfort, painful periods, bleeding & irregular menstrual periods; wt gain.
Drug Interactions
Primidone, phenytoin, barbiturates, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, felbamate, topiramate; rifampicin; ritonavir, nelfinavir, nevirapine, efavirenz; boceprevir, telaprevir; griseofulvin; bosentan; St. John’s wort; clarithromycin, erythromycin; fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole; diltiazem; aldosterone antagonists, K-sparing diuretics May increase effect w/ cyclosporine. May decrease effect w/ lamotrigine. Avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
