Orlistat
Indications/Uses
In conjunction w/ mildly hypocaloric diet for the treatment of obese patients w/ BMI ≥30 kg/m2 or those overwt w/ BMI >28 kg/m2 w/ risk factors.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 120 mg.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately before or during or up to 1 hr after each main meal. If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose may be omitted.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ chronic malabsorption syndrome, cholestasis. Lactation.
Special Precautions
High-fat diet, type 2 DM. May reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vit eg, vit A, D, E, K. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Oil spotting, flatus w/ fecal discharge, fecal urgency, fatty/oily stool, increased defecation, fecal incontinence. Abdominal discomfort, flatulence, diarrhea, soft stool, tooth or gum effects, upper or lower resp tract infections, flu, headache, menstrual disorders, anxiety, fatigue, UTI.
Drug Interactions
Pravastatin, vit D, vit E, β-carotene, fibrate, acarbose, biguanide, anorectic drugs, warfarin, other anticoagulants, oral hypoglycemia drugs eg, sulfonylurea.
