Acetylcysteine
Indications/Uses
Mucolytic therapy in acute & chronic bronchial & pulmonary diseases w/ thick mucus eg, acute bronchitis, recurrent chronic & acute bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema, mucoviscidosis & bronchiectasis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥14 yr 1 cap 2-3 times daily, 6-14 yr 1 cap 2 times daily. Mucoviscidosis Childn ≥6 yr 1 cap 3 times daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken after meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if there are signs of bronchospasm. Monitor patients w/ asthma during treatment. Ensure adequate fluid intake. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in childn <6 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Stomatitis, dizziness, tinnitus; allergic reactions eg, itching, urticaria, cutaneous eruption (exanthema, rash); bronchospasm; rapid heartbeat, decreased BP; hemorrhage.
Drug Interactions
Co-administration w/ cough relievers (antitussives) may cause cessation of dangerous secretions. Tetracycline HCl must be given separately by at least 2 hr interval. Increased vasodilating effects & blood flow w/ glycerol trinitrate (nitroglycerin).
