Gabapentin
Indications/Uses
Epilepsy (partial seizure w/ or w/o secondary general seizure). Neuropathic pain in adult ≥18 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Epilepsy Adult & childn >12 yr 900-1,800 mg daily. Day 1: 300 mg once daily. Day 2: 300 mg twice daily. Day 3: 300 mg 3 times daily. Neuropathic pain Adult Day 1: 300 mg once daily. Day 2: 300 mg twice daily. Day 3: 300 mg 3 times daily. Doses may be further increased by 300 mg daily to a max of 1,800 mg daily in 3 divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Acute pancreatitis.
Special Precautions
Not for general primary seizure. May impair the ability to drive or operate the machinery. Patients w/ impaired kidney function. Childn <12 yr. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, drowsiness, tremor, nausea, vomiting, fatigue. Nystagmus, tremor, diplopia, amblyopia, dysarthria, amnesia, asthenia, paresthesia, arthralgia, purpura, dyspepsia, anxiety, wt gain, UTI, pharingitis, leucopenia, abnormal thinking, erythema multiforme, SJS, confusion, depression, emotional lability, hostility, hallucination, blood glucose fluctuation, rhinitis, nervousness, myalgia, headache, nausea, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Al- & Mg-containing antacids, cimetidine. May cause false +ve result in Amex N-multistix G dipstick test.
