Meropenem trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Pneumonia, nosocomial pneumonia, UTI, intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, skin & skin structure infections, meningitis, septicemia in adult & childn. Empiric treatment in adult w/ infection suspected w/ febrile neutropenia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Adult Pneumonia, UTI, gynecological infections eg, endometritis, skin & skin structure infections 500 mg 8 hrly. Nosocomial pneumonia, peritonitis, suspected neutropenia, septicemia 1 g 8 hrly. Meningitis 2 g 8 hrly. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 10-20 mg/kg 8 hrly. Meningitis 40 mg/kg 8 hrly. Childn >50 kg Adult dose.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity reactions.
Special Precautions
History of hypersensitivity to β-lactam antibiotics. History of allergy. Not recommended for infections due to MRSA. Patients w/ liver disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended for babies <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Local inj site reactions, systemic allergic reactions, rash, pruritus, urticaria, erythema multiform, SJS, TEN, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, reversible thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, neutropenia, +ve results of Coomb's test, increased serum bilirubin, transaminase, alkaline phosphatase & LDH, headache, paresthesia, convulsion, oral & vag candidiasis.
