Cefixime
Indications/Uses
Uncomplicated UTI; otitis media; pharyngitis & tonsillitis; acute bronchitis & acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis; typhoid fever in childn w/ multiresistance to standard regimen treatment; uncomplicated gonorrhea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥30 kg 50-100 mg twice daily. May be increased to 200 mg twice daily in more severe infection. Typhoid fever Childn 10-15 mg/kg daily for 2 wk. Urethral/cervical gonorrhea 400 mg as a single dose. Renal impairment CrCl 21-60 mL/min or undergoing hemodialysis 75% of standard dose, CrCl <20 mL/min or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis 50% of standard dose.
Administration
Should be taken with food: May be taken w/ food to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
History of hypersensitivity to penicillins, personal or family history of allergy eg, bronchial asthma, rash & urticaria, serious kidney dysfunction, patients w/ poor oral nutrition intake, receiving parenteral nutrition. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 mth including newborn & premature infants. Debilitated patients, elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Shock, hypersensitivity, granulocytopenia or eosinophilia; increased SGOT, SGPT, alkaline phosphatase; kidney disorders; GI disturbances; resp disorders, stomatitis, candidiasis, vit K deficiencies.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, anticoagulants, carbamazepine, salicylate.
