Flunarizine HCl
Indications/Uses
Migraine prophylaxis. Treatment & prevention of disturbances in the vestibular, cerebral & peripheral circulatory system; dizziness, tinnitus, vertigo, difficulty in concentrating, confusion, memory loss, nocturnal cramps, paresthesia & coldness of the extremities.
Dosage/Direction for Use
5-10 mg daily. Migraine prophylaxis Adult <65 yr Initially 10 mg daily, >65 yr Initially 5 mg daily. Discontinue if no observed improvement after 2 mth. Maintenance: 5 days treatment each wk at the same daily dose & 2 successive drug-free days. Interrupt after 6 mth & re-initiate only if the patient relapses. Vertigo Same daily dose used for migraine. Not to be given longer than needed for symptom control. Discontinue if no observed improvement after 1 mth for chronic vertigo or 2 mth for paroxysmal vertigo.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
History of depressive illness, preexisting symptoms of Parkinson's disease or other extrapyramidal disorders. Co-administration w/ β-blockers.
Special Precautions
Discontinue if fatigue increase progressively, therapeutic effects wane, extrapyramidal or depressive symptoms emerge. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness &/or fatigue, wt gain &/or increased appetite. Depression & extrapyramidal symptoms (chronic treatment).
Drug Interactions
Alcohol, hypnotics or tranquillisers. Galactorrhea w/ OC.
