Indications/Uses
Adjunctive therapy for the reduction of elevated serum cholesterol in hypercholesterolemia inadequately controlled by diet. Lowers elevated cholesterol in combined hypercholesterolemia & hypertriglyceridemia (not indicated in cases of hypertriglyceridemia is abnormally of most concern). Relief of pruritus associated w/ partial biliary obstruction. As adjunct to rehydration therapy in relieving diarrhea due to bile acid malabsorption associated w/ ileal resection, Crohn's disease, vagotomy & diabetic vagal neuropathy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 4 g (1 sachet) 2 times daily, increase to 8 g 2 times daily after 2-4 wk. May increase up to 24 g/day as needed. Pruritus due to partial biliary obstruction & primary biliary cirrhosis 4-8 g/day. Bile acid malabsorption-induced diarrhea Initially 4 g 3 times daily w/ subsequent adjustment as needed. Childn 6-12 yr Adjust dose depending on patient's condition.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Preferably taken w/ meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Complete biliary obstruction.
Special Precautions
Hypothyroidism, DM, nephrotic syndrome, dysproteinemia, obstructive liver disease. Periodically measure serum triglyceride. May reduce absorption of vit A, D & K. Prolonged use may produce hyperchloremic acidosis. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Constipation; abdominal discomfort, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, anorexia, steatorrhea, rash & irritation on skin, tongue & perianal area; prolonged prothrombin time ecchymosis or anemia; GI rectal bleeding, black stool/s, hemorrhoidal bleeding, ulcer attack, sour taste, pancreatitis, rectal pain or diverculitis; urticaria, asthma, wheezing or shortness of breath; backache, muscle & joint pains or arthritis; headche, anxiety, vertigo, dizziness, fatigue, tinnitus, syncope, drowsiness, femoral nerve pain; uveitis; hematuria, dysuria, diuresis; wt loss or gain, increased libido, swollen glands, edema or dental bleeding.
Drug Interactions
Reduces absorption of phenylbutazone, warfarin, chlorothiazide, tetracycline, penicillin G, phenobarb, thyroid prep & digitalis.
